iPhone vs Samsung Galaxy: Which Should You Buy Refurbished?

Both make excellent phones, so the decision is not really about quality. Here are the differences that will actually affect you day to day.

Anyone telling you one of these is simply better than the other is not being straight with you. Both make phones that take excellent photographs, last a full day, and will still be running in five years.

The decision is about which set of compromises suits you. Here are the ones that actually change your daily life, rather than the ones that fill comparison tables.

1. What everyone you know already uses

This is the least technical point on the list and the one most likely to decide it.

If your family and friends are on iPhone, an iPhone gets you into iMessage and FaceTime by default, and photos and files move between your devices without thinking about it. If you sit in front of a Windows PC all day and use Google services for mail, photos and calendar, a Galaxy fits that life with less friction.

Neither locks you out of anything important. WhatsApp, Signal and video calling work identically on both. But the path of least resistance is real, and it is worth being honest with yourself about which side of it you already live on.

2. How long the software keeps coming

Apple has historically supported iPhones with new iOS versions for around five to six years, and security updates beyond that. Samsung has closed that gap: the Galaxy S24 ships with a commitment of seven years of updates, and even the budget Galaxy A16 promises six operating system upgrades and six years of security patches.

This matters far more when you buy refurbished than when you buy new, because you are starting partway through the clock. A phone from three years ago with a seven year commitment has four years left. The same phone from a maker who supports two years has none.

3. Cables and charging

Every Galaxy in our range uses USB-C. Apple moved to USB-C with the iPhone 15, so an iPhone 15 or later shares a cable with your laptop, your tablet and everything else. An iPhone 14 or older uses Lightning, and that means a second cable in the drawer.

Worth checking before you buy a refurbished iPhone, because the models either side of that change look almost identical and charge with completely different cables.

4. Cameras, and the honest version

At the top of both ranges, the hardware is close and the difference is taste. Samsung processes for a brighter, punchier, more saturated image. Apple processes for something closer to what your eye saw. Neither is correct.

Where they genuinely diverge is zoom. Samsung’s Ultra models carry two telephoto lenses, giving 3x and 5x optical zoom alongside a 200MP main sensor on the S24 Ultra. No iPhone in our range matches that reach. If long zoom is what you want, that narrows the decision quickly.

Also worth knowing: on Samsung, a telephoto lens is a flagship feature. The A series does not have one at all, which our A series against S series comparison covers in detail.

5. How much you want to change

Android lets you change the launcher, set different default apps, resize and rearrange almost anything, and use two apps side by side. iOS gives you far fewer decisions to make, and for a lot of people that is the feature, not the limitation.

If you enjoy setting a phone up exactly how you want it, Galaxy. If you want to take it out of the box and never think about it, iPhone.

6. What this means when you buy refurbished

iPhones hold their value more stubbornly than Android phones do. The practical consequence is that a given budget usually reaches a newer Galaxy than it does an iPhone.

So the real refurbished question is often not “iPhone or Galaxy”, it is “a two-year-old iPhone, or a one-year-old Galaxy flagship”. Compare across that line rather than model against model, and check the battery figure and storage on both before you decide. Our guide to refurbished against new covers what to look for.

The short version

  • Choose iPhone if your circle is on iPhone, you want the simplest possible setup, and you value long support without having to research it.
  • Choose Galaxy if you want serious zoom, you live in Windows and Google, you like control over how your phone works, or you want the most phone your budget can reach.

Either way, every device we sell is fully tested, graded, and carries a 12-month warranty with 14 days to change your mind. The detail is on our returns page.
