Overview

The Apple iPhone 17 is the first standard iPhone to get ProMotion, bringing the 120Hz adaptive display that was previously exclusive to the Pro models.

ProMotion

A 120Hz adaptive refresh rate makes scrolling visibly smoother and lets the panel drop its rate when the screen is static to protect battery. Until this generation it was Pro only, so a refurbished iPhone 17 is the most affordable route to it.

Cameras

The 48MP Fusion main camera at f/1.6 with sensor-shift stabilisation is now joined by a 48MP ultrawide with autofocus, so both rear lenses are high resolution rather than one being a lower resolution companion. The front camera steps up to 18MP with Centre Stage, which keeps you framed as you move.

Display and build

The 6.3 inch Super Retina XDR OLED peaks at 2000 nits behind Ceramic Shield 2 glass, which Apple rates as more scratch resistant than the original, in an aluminium frame with Ceramic Shield on the back as well.

Everyday use

Apple’s 3nm A19 chip with 8GB of RAM, storage from 256GB, USB-C, MagSafe and Qi2 charging, Wi-Fi 7, Face ID and IP68 water resistance rated to six metres.
