Refurbished iPads

Tablets are the single best category to buy refurbished. They live on a desk or a sofa rather than in a pocket, so they take far less punishment than a phone, and they are replaced for reasons that have nothing to do with anything being wrong with them.

iPads also stay supported for a long time, and the things people actually use them for, video, reading, browsing, drawing and schoolwork, have not become more demanding in years. An older iPad does those jobs exactly as well as a new one.

WiFi or Cellular?

This is the only decision on this page that is difficult to reverse, because it is built into the hardware.

  • WiFi. Connects through your home, office or a hotspot from your phone. Cheaper, and enough for most people.
  • Cellular and WiFi. Takes its own SIM, so it works anywhere your phone works, with no tethering. Worth it if the iPad travels, or if it is for someone who will not reliably set up a hotspot.

Cellular models also contain a GPS chip that WiFi models do not, which matters if you use one for navigation.

Reading the generations

The standard iPad is numbered by generation rather than by year, so a 9th Gen is newer than an 8th Gen. The main changes across recent generations are screen size, the processor, and whether the device charges over Lightning or USB-C.

The iPad Mini is the same idea in a smaller body, for reading and one-handed use.
